Matt Hupp was inspired by competitive excellence. He gave all he had to every sport he ever played, and as a result was transformed into a strong leader, demonstrating courage and discipline. “I have always had a personal connection to such a special organization. The Twelve Oaks Foundation offers a multitude of enjoyable events such as Matt’s Mile and the 3v3 Basketball tournament, both of which I participated and volunteered; this involvement prompted me to join the Teen Advisory Board to further my love and devotion for helping others. After winning the Matt Hupp Legacy scholarship, this only encouraged my passion even further. I knew coming to the University of Illinois that I wanted to continue my commitment to giving back to those in need. I decided to join IlliniThon, an organization that benefits the children of St. John’s Hospital in Springfield. We opt to raise money through various fundraising events, which then culminates with a 12-hour student-run Dance Marathon Event in the spring. I could not be more excited to partake in such a beneficiary event and continue this involvement for the rest of college. I will always hold a special place in my heart for the Twelve Oaks Foundation, for inspiring me to continue touching the lives of those who truly need it; nothing is more heartwarming, and I owe that to this wonderful organization.”

“Receiving the Matt Hupp Legacy scholarship was an extremely special moment that I will never forget. I was lucky enough to be teammates with Matt on the St. Gilbert track team where his tenaciousness and exuberant work ethic motivated me everyday to push myself beyond my limits. Whether Matt’s team was losing by ten or winning by ten, he always played the same, which is a characteristic that I strived for during my athletic career.
This scholarship allowed me to reflect on my involvement in athletics. I realized that through sports, I became the person I am today and learned more about the person I strive to be- a person who changes lives, specifically, a nurse. My decision to pursue a nursing career at the University of Wisconsin-Madison stems from the many leadership opportunities that high school athletics presented me. I want to live my life serving others and impacting those around me, just as Matt’s leadership impacted me. Matt was truly an inspiration to so many, and his legacy will live on with me forever.”
